What is the segment next to the document number in the Purchase Order window used for?


SAP Business One facilitates an automatic split by warehouse to a purchase order, i.e. a purchase order (PO) can be created for items in several different warehouses. The document number of the PO remains the same, yet individual documents may be printed for each warehouse. These documents may then be distinguished by the segment next to the document number.
When a PO is created where the items will be received into different warehouses, SAP Business One will display the following system message when the button 'Add' is clicked:
The system will create a sub-ordinate purchase order. Do you want to add this document?
When confirming by clicking on 'Add' in the system message window, as many new PO documents are added as there are destination warehouses in the original document. The original document will have the title 'Purchase Order – Blanket', document status 'Cancelled' & will display all items in all warehouses. The follow-on documents will retain the original document number & additionally display the segment number. The document status, of course, is 'Open'.
If it is a common business process to create POs for different warehouses, SAP Business One allows to have the box 'Split Purchase Order' on the Logistics tab of the document automatically ticked. To achieve this, go to:
Administration -> System Initialisation -> Document Setting -> per document tab -> Purchase order -> tick the box 'Split Purchase Order'.
Should this not be a common business practise, SAP recommends to leave this box unticked. If the need then arises to generate such a document, it can be initiated by placing a tick manually in the box 'Split Purchase Order' on the Logistics tab of the document.
