Call For Bazaar Meeting 2011
Postby red1 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 4:28 pm
Hi jcmac and the bazaar,
Thank you for your questions. This emphasised to me that there are also some who are new to the project as well as new to this opinion vote at hand. Also for the benefit of non-English readers, and to be compatible to present day GoogleTranslator, i will also try to use simpler but more words to give the googletranslator and the reader non-ambiguity.:
- To be valid, the subject of a vote need to clear, simple, and about one single thing.
ANSWER: Absolutely. You are right. But my call for vote here has a history, and i will try to shorten it in one post so that you can follow and try to understand and help me understand what to do next. Now this vote came about in an emotional way. I was very sad that day on one cold morning in the Austrian countryside while visiting community supporters and mentoring them to be contributors and joining this project. I felt that the top contributors that joined our projects and contributed alot to give us the best since 2006 has left and pushed far from the project. It is becoming more difficult to reach their work. Versions are getting broken. The present committees here do not understand and even carried out a series of unannounced and invisible steps that further alienate such contributors and their contributions. They are delisted, blocked, demoralised and not respected. They are not allowed to protest and labelled in bad tone. I have met them and i know they are human too. They must feel very hurt to leave our project. This is a software project that depends on their proven software skills. My contributions to this project are many and i need not recount them. I am an Asian that was brought up in a communal way to be humble and not show your own individuality no matter how strong. So here i speak of 'them' and not of 'me'.
When i help create this project in the red1.org/forum, i learn about the bazaar way versus the cathedral way. I was impressed by the writings of Eric Raymond entitled "The Cathedral and The Bazaar" and "The Magic Cauldron". He speaks of the counter-intuitive way to do the best software in the world namely the Linux kernel. He tells us about how a Benevolent Dictator, Linus Torvalds has final say and no structure nor office like most big software companies such as IBM. SAP and Oracle or Microsoft could create the best server-side core operating system kernel on top of the GNU framework without paying anyone and without a proper meeting even. It is anarchic but it works, and it beaten the hell out of even Sun (it closed more than its Unix division), and it is scaring the hell out of Microsoft, a multi billion dollar giant capable of buying everyone around Linus. But Linux remained unassailable. So i feel sad because such a dream is now going down. Clearly going down. And this present committees are so distant from such alien ideas that they have to be removed and the bazaar way of the original way it was created restored. I mean in 2006, in my little farm in Malaysia, in my virtual forum at http://www.red1.org, without meeting anyone nor hear their voices on Skype, i could gather people and within 36 hours the ADempiere project was born. It scared the hell out of Jorg Janke which eventually left Compiere and Compiere has gone open core. Same with Openbravo.
Yes, yes, it has now grown beyond me, but has it? Is the project improving or declining since i left? I have always wanted to leave. I have always get out of the way of strong contributors here whom i called priceless. Of course some of them need a nanny to improve their manners but it is OK. I do not mind been defaced in my wiki. I am willing to lay down and be stepped on. But not this project. It must return to its former glory and might. It must be a threat and most important it must NOT be bought by commercial interests. When i hear people in power today putting out their half-baked work onto the trunk and call it official and charge money for opening up more, that is the last straw.
Thus this call for the return of non-commercial interest contributors who are proven where we use their code successfully without paying them a cent (for most of us) must or should be given a chance to return and with dignity. They must not be asked to wait in the breadline as if they are holocaust victims. They are not. They are victors who saved our project, many times. Look at the ZK Ajax, and ask yourself which company could have done that? Look at the LCO (Spanish language localisation with WH Tax) and ask yourself which soul would have given you that in a well working form, always reviewed, improved and never hidden? Ask yourself who gave you the Charts of Accounts editor? Also ask yourself who gave you modules that are full of holes, headaches and lost deals? I know the answers to those. If you don't *haha* write me an email and i will give you their unix names.
This vote cannot be as simple as that. It has to offer a correct solution. It has to say, "OK, now we are back to 2006. Now what?" It has to answer fears and concerns of the many and not of the few. In short it has to solve the whole problem at one go. Since i followed this project since inception from day 1, i have met most of the parties and stayed with some of them even and have to come to a single conclusion in my mind - i must return to lead it out of this mess again. (Of course someone called me and said i created this mess. That is why i ask for a vote and spell out each word particularly the ones that say "This also mean .. vote of no-confidence… me to lead the transition…etc" so as to be non-ambiguous and crystal clear what this amounts to. Yes in other words it is a coup. And coups do not follow rules of the government of the day. Precisely because the present government have setup rules to protect from any coup. It has made itself the purpose of the project, and no longer the facilitator. It will not stand down even against public opinion. It choose who to answer and who not to answer. It does not return my call to meet its supreme chairman, who thinks he is untouchable. It has telling tales of flaws that are smacked of collective stupidi.. i mean yes men. It keeps its meetings private. It offers brush off answers to the contrary with a *HAHA*.
It also removed my admin rights to this project - a very powerful tool of bazaar work. I have faithfully administer this SF space since inception and never abused it. I gave out admin rights to those who asked for it and shown proof of contribution or willing to help. I even gave the admin rights to the present untouchable chairman. But he removes mine even without a word of courtesy. No last words for the beheaded. But that is ok. I merely asked that he tell me where were the executioner's orders, or at least let me see my executioner's face (name). None of these benefit was accorded to me. I did not even asked 'what is my crime'? I was given government papers that say something like, "WE HAVE ABSOLUTE RIGHT, YOU DON'T ANYMORE".
I was harassed to give up the http://www.adempiere.org http://www.adempiere.com domains of which i wisely gave the .com to the next best contributor on the other side of the world from me. I, the one who created this project, strangely become the hunted, the disavowed. But that is OK. It is the project i am always referring to that is most important When there were absolutely no binary release, then a single promise of release, with a date they themselves published, and they do not keep (of course they need us to cooperate with them first before doing so), and then releasing one that has holes in it, bad peer review or no review at all (I watch the trackers constantly - or my project peers (i still have them here and there) do on my behalf), and then my releases status reversed as unofficial, i began to ask myself what has become of this baby? Has it grown up to be insolent? Has it now forgotten its father's hopes and mother's prayers for it.
I am not sure. I have grown old and out of the central government. Then i remembered that once upon a time I did asked openly for a vote and a voice from the community. I remembered it heeded my call. I wish to now test the waters again. To see if it is still there.
Today i got my answer. And now i must act. I hereby call for a meeting. It is open, to both sides, shouters, abusers and screamers alike. its meeting logs shall be pasted with absolutely no edits just like the good old days. It shall return to a benevolent dictatorship. There shall be accountability. There shall be good software.
I got nothing to lose. I reached 50 years of age, kids grown up, easily found new friends even here in southern Germany right through Siberia, first hand access to the best brains in the project, i feel unbeatable ever before. Yes, i have grown. I am no longer the lone part-time farmer, part-time online tutorial writer of red1.org. I am now red1 at its best.
So these, my words are crystal clear, so make no mistake. Yes, this is a return away from a failing democracy to meritocracy and peerocracy under a monarchy. I am not a salesman promising something that is not sold. What i speak here is sold.
I have the power of the bazaar and the power of the domains. But i offer two choices. I can take over, or i can leave. That explains my http://www.adempiere.org/notice.html which the present PMC head suddenly found his technical voice to open up and fire upon and proven where his interests lie, certainly not in my more important code review. They will not even understand that i wish for a legitimate fork that can end this dispute, go in peace and grow again. But it is not up to me to say. I have asked for your opinion and the majority of you (outside government) has spoken.
So i exist only under your choice - which becomes my choice. Your voice becomes my voice. Come to the meeting so that others and most importantly I hear you. Tell me when and where is the best time. Tell me what to do. And by Allah, Dhamma, Tao, your intuition, I will.
May the bazaar be my final hand.
- The positive votes on this thread show real discontent about the progress of the project, but the vote is really unclear. Is it about: project structure change? A move to some undefined dictatorship? Who should be that new dictator? A disbanding of cc? Carlos to return as PMC? Red to return as a leader ... ?
Absolutely. There is no other way. But those two ways above. If i do not act, not that i am a coward. I was leader. I have faced it. I took the reins and i have administer real power to this project. It was through the bazaar. It shall return to the bazaar.
- Regarding the history of conflict among different community members: not everything is black or white, not everything can be resolved to who is right or wrong. Often, both sides are right. At some point, people need to agree to disagree and move forward for the benefit of the project.
Precisely. The beauty of the open forum rule which i consistently and persistently maintained from inception in 2006 till 2010 when i left was to leave all meetings logs pasted, all chats recorded, no forums deleted, all wiki (thanks to Wikimedia) intact. They may erase, but you have no idea who is helping me to recover them. Yes, perhaps it is hard to go through them but it answers the question of black and white. Historical records help reconstitute events. Someday someone will render it justice. That is for historians when we are all dead or gone. Today we are alive and need to live better and free in our world. Do it now, it will save you a lot of money to see a saved project. All your busy hours to rob you of this meeting will rob you much much more when you end up with inferior questionable code in your official version and better code in unofficial versions which are going private under allowance of GPL law. I still have access to the best private code on demand but not all of you.
Let the best take care of your project, then i get out of the way (again) and you have not just a nice day, but a nice life.
I always remain, *spits*

Honourable Chairman of ADeV (ADempiere e.V) Norbert,
I am exercising my mandate to put the SF project and house in order among which is the restoration of my admin rights which is not done. I have emailed you last week for a physical meeting in Bonn but you did not reply. Please make this smooth for the rest of the world that has invested alot in ADempiere. After this i will call a bazaar wide meeting and country representatives on how to execute their aspirations within the mandate. Everything will be open and logged.
Kind regards
