More than 6,200 children affected by tainted milk

Contaminated【被污染的；有毒的】 milk formula【奶粉】 has already killed three babies in China. [AFP]
In China, more than six thousand babies are seriously ill from drinking contaminated milk
formula.
Its been revealed【显示；透露】 that 22 Chinese companies have been involved in selling
the tainted【被污染的；有毒的】 milk including a part owned New Zealand company.
Our New Zealand correspondent, Kerrie Ritchie, reports the Chinese government says
6,244 babies have developed【罹患】 kidney stones【肾结石】 after drinking the milk
formula.
Three have died.
The toxic【有毒的】 substance【物质】 melamine【三聚氰胺】 was added to the milk
used in the formula, at collection centres to make protein【蛋白质】 levels appear higher.
Fonterra knew about the contamination in August and is under fire【避免争论/事端】 for waiting six weeks
to raise the alarm.
CEO Andrew Ferrier says it was a difficult situation.
"The decision was made at the beginning that we would have more influence on this
issue if we worked within the chinese situation"
On Wednesday, milk formula from 22 other Chinese companies also tested positive for
melamine. |
